Le jour où un vieux marin au visage balafré élit domicile à l’auberge de son père, le jeune Jim Hawkins est loin d’imaginer le périple qui l’attend. À la mort mystérieuse du flibustier, il trouve une carte au fond de son coffre. Sans hésiter, il embarque sur l’<i>Hispaniola</i> en quête du trésor caché dans l’île du Squelette, en compagnie d’un douteux équipage… Chef-d’œuvre du roman d’aventures, « mélange indescriptible de prodigieux et d’humain » selon les mots de Henry James, <i>L’Île au trésor</i> (1883) se double d’un récit d’initiation, qui voit un modeste fils d’aubergiste, affranchi de ses parents, affronter les mille dangers du monde de la piraterie. Mais la trahison, la cruauté et la ruse l’empêcheront-elles de rentrer chez lui riche et couvert de gloire?
