Tasmanie, années 1940. <br/> C'est l'été, Ned a quinze ans et ne pense qu'à une chose : s'acheter un bateau pour remonter à l'embouchure du fleuve, là où dix ans plus tôt son père, ses frères et lui ont croisé la route d'une baleine folle. <br/> Alors, du soir au matin, Ned chasse des lapins, les dépouille, espérant récolter assez d'argent avec leurs fourrures pour financer son projet secret et ainsi montrer sa valeur aux siens. Mais tandis que les semaines passent, les difficultés s'accumulent au verger familial de Limberlost. Bientôt Ned devra prendre une décision qui façonnera le cours de son existence.

Un roman émouvant sur la vie d'un fils d'agriculteur en Tanzanie, marqué à jamais par le temps d'un été 1944, suspendu au sort des frères mobilisés, entre émotions submergeantes, père mutique, difficultés économiques. Les émotions sont très bien rendues, la nature fait l'objet de belles descriptions.
