Un opus tellurique, néanmoins tourné vers le céleste ... 5/5
- De crainte que ce magnifique album ne passe inaperçu, je m'autorise à essayer de vous donner l'envie d'y prêter une oreille (la meilleure de votre paire, cela va sans dire...). Pour avoir découvert Ches Smith (en Live !) au sein du "Ceramic Dog" (trio hautement énergique) de l'incontournable guitariste Marc Ribot, j'avoue que je ne connaissais pas jusqu'alors ses talents de compositeur, qu'il démontre ici avec maturité, tout en gardant singularité & fraicheur. En compagnie de Mat Maneri (violon alto) et de Craig Taborn (piano), le batteur & percussionniste signe avec ce premier album enregistré pour le respectable label munichois ECM, une pièce de "Jazz de chambre" des plus personnelles. Une musique que je pourrais qualifier de "Climatique", parsemée d'ostinatos mélodiques & d'improvisations lunaires, à la limite parfois d'un certain Free (un mot qui fait peur encore à certains, j'en conviens mais pourtant qui n'est pas sale...). Une abstraction réelle aux frontières de la musique contemporaine, capable de vous plonger dans une mélancolie douce & cotonneuse. J'en reviens à vos portugaises, que j'imagine ne pas être ensablées pour m'avoir suivi jusque là et leur en souhaite d'ores et déjà une écoute des meilleures !!
