Alors qu’une sonde robotisée se pose enfin sur Mars, prélude à une première mission habitée vers la planète rouge, Elma York embarque à bord de la navette qui la ramènera sur Terre après une affectation de trois mois sur la Lune. Mais le retour ne se passe pas comme prévu : un incident contraint son appareil à se poser en urgence dans un champ désert, loin du lieu d’atterrissage initial. Un groupe de terroristes appartenant au mouvement Earth First en profite pour prendre en otage l’ensemble des passagers du vaisseau. Leurs revendications sont simples : l’arrêt de la conquête spatiale et la réaffectation du budget à la survie sur Terre. Est-ce que cette action violente va ruiner tous les espoirs de la Lady Astronaute d’aller sur Mars ?
